The history of the dice is, in many ways, the history of human gaming. Early humans primarily used the "astragali," or knucklebones, of hooved animals like sheep, goats, or oxen. Because of the asymmetrical shape of these bones, they would land on four distinct sides when thrown. Ancient players would assign different values to each side, creating the earliest known games of chance. Eventually, players began modifying the bones, grinding them down to make them more symmetrical and drilling holes to represent numbers, moving us closer to the modern concept of a die.

The Birth of the Perfect Cube

As human civilization advanced into the Bronze and Iron ages, so did our gaming peripherals. We moved away from animal bones and began carving dice out of wood, stone, ivory, and eventually bone and metal. The standard six-sided cubic die (the hexahedron) that we universally recognize today—with pips arranged so that opposite sides always add up to seven—became standardized in China around 600 BCE and simultaneously appeared in ancient Egyptian and Roman cultures.

The Romans, in particular, were famously obsessed with dice games. Roman soldiers were known to play a game called "Tesserae" (which used cubic dice) in their camps. In fact, it was so popular that various emperors attempted to ban the game because soldiers were gambling away their armor and weapons. The Digital Age: RNG Algorithms

For over two thousand years, the technology of the dice remained largely unchanged. It wasn't until the late 20th century, with the advent of computer science, that the dice truly evolved.

These algorithms use incredibly complex math, often utilizing environmental noise (like the micro-fluctuations in CPU temperature) as a "seed" to ensure that the outcome is statistically indistinguishable from a perfect physical roll.
